Decision log

Every initiative keeps a decision log: what was decided, why, by whom and when. Later readers can see how the initiative got where it is, and the organization can learn from it.

Recording a decision

On the initiative's page, under Decision log → Record a decision:

  • Decision: what was decided, in a sentence (up to 500 characters).
  • Rationale: why, in the decider's words.
  • Decided by: the member who decided, or a group, such as "Steering committee vote, 6–1". One of the two is required.

The entry is dated when it is recorded. Anyone on the initiative's team can record decisions.

Some decisions are recorded for you. Changing an initiative's budget envelope writes an entry, "Budget envelope changed from … to …", with the reason given as its rationale.

Entries are never edited

Once recorded, an entry cannot be edited or deleted, by anyone, through the app or the database. To fix a mistake or record a change of mind:

  1. Choose Correct this entry under the entry.
  2. Record the corrected decision.

The correction is a new entry marked Correction that says which entry it corrects. The original stays, marked Corrected and struck through, so the history shows both. Each entry can be corrected once; to correct a correction, correct the newer entry.

Where decisions appear

  • On the initiative's page, newest first.
  • On the timeline of every issue the initiative addresses, as "Decision logged".
  • In My work, for the decider, for 90 days.
  • In search.

A restricted initiative's decisions appear only to the people who can see the initiative (Initiatives).
